Sony
One of the world’s leading electronics manufacturers and media conglomerates, Sony was founded in 1946 as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K., and soon built Japan’s first consumer tape recorder. In 1956 Sony produced Japan’s first transistor radio and in 1958 changed the company name to Sony.
Notable products launched by Sony include the Trinitron range of televisions, the Betamax VCR, the Walkman personal cassette player, the 3.5” floppy disk design, the Compact Disc (in partnership with Philips), the Discman portable compact disc player, the MiniDisc audio format, the Playstation range of gaming products and the Blu-Ray high definition optical disc format.
Sony also acquired the CBS record label in 1988 (since renamed to Sony Music Entertainment) and the Columbia Pictures Entertainment movie studio in 1989 (since renamed to Sony Pictures Entertainment), and in 2001 started a joint venture with Ericsson to create the Sony Ericsson mobile phone brand.
Sony has corporate offices in 65 countries worldwide and is listed on both the Tokyo and New York stock exchanges.
