PDF Converter Professional, PDF Converter and PDF Create can be used 5 times before activation is required. However, Nuance highly recommends activating the product with “Activate Now!” following installation.
If PDF Converter Professional or PDF Create are not activated, the ‘Trial Version www.Nuance.com’ watermark (in PDF 4 products) or 'Trial Version www.scansoft.com' (in PDF 3 products) will appear in the resulting PDF file.
Here are the most common activation issues:
No internet connection.
An Internet connection is needed to activate, but it does not have to be on the machine that where the software is installed. For information on how to manually activate the product, please see the "Activation Tour" at the following website: http://support.nuance.com/productactivation/ Please note that PDF Converter Professional is a combination of PDF Converter and PDF Create!. If the manual activation process is being followed, both products will need to be activated separately.
An application is blocking communication to the internet.
This commonly occurs with firewall applications. Temporarily disable your firewall software to complete activation. For information on how to temporarily disable your firewall software, please consult the documentation that came with it. Otherwise, please refer to the manual activation instructions above to activate.
When activating a Nuance product, the following error message occurs after entering the serial number “The serial number is invalid.”
This indicates that the serial number was entered incorrectly. Verify that the serial number was entered correctly including entering 0's (zeros) not O's.
When launching PDF Converter Professional or PDF Create, the activation hook process must be running in the background. Without this component running, a trial watermark will appear on all PDF files. Installation issues sometimes prevent this component from running automatically when the product is launched. The following steps detail how to enable this process manually and then add it to Microsoft Windows Startup as a workaround:
1. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\ program directory and select the folder for the installed product. For example, with PDF Converter Professional 4 installed, browse to the following location:
2. "C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PDF Professional 4.0\" folder.
3. Next, locate the appropriate activation hook for the installed product:
• "PDFPro3Hook.exe" for PDF Converter Professional 3
• "PDFPro4Hook.exe" for PDF Converter Professional 4
• "PDFCreateHook.exe" for PDF Create! 2
• "PDFCreate3Hook.exe" for PDF Create! 3
• "PDFCreate4Hook.exe" for PDF Create! 4
4. Double-click on the corresponding activation hook to launch the component.
5. Test opening a PDF file in PDF Converter Professional or creating a PDF file with PDF Create!. If the trial watermark no longer appears, follow through the remaining steps to add the activation hook to Windows Startup.
6. Next, navigate back to the folder than contained the activation hook.
7. Right-click on the activation hook and select "Create Shortcut" from the context menu.
8. Copy this shortcut to the Startup folder common to all users on the system.
9. This Startup folder can be found by clicking Start> Run, and typing the following path: %allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
This will now start the Hook.exe each time a user logs into Microsoft Windows.
The “PDF Create! 4 Trial – www.nuance.com” watermark may also appear in instances where a previous version of PDF Converter Professional or PDF Create has been installed and not fully uninstalled. This can prevent the “PDFCreateHook.exe” or “PDFPro4Hook.exe” files from loading. The following steps detail how to fix this issue but do require manual changes to the Windows Registry. Please create a backup of the Windows Registry before making any modifications.
1. Click on “Start > Run”.
2. Type the word “REGEDIT” without the quotes.
3. Click on the “My Computer” icon to highlight it.
4. Click “Registry > Export Registry File”.
5. Save this file to your Windows Desktop and name the file Backup. (This will create a backup copy of the registry).
6. Browse to the following location in the Registry Editor: HKLM\Software\Zeon\DocuCom\PDF Driver\Hook1
7. If a Hook2 or Hook3 exist then delete Hook1.
8. If a Hook2 and a Hook3 still remain, then delete Hook2. Otherwise, move skip to the next step.
9. Rename Hook2 (or Hook3) to Hook1.
10. Close the Registry Editor.
The product appears to be activated but a "DocuCom PDF Trial www.pdfwizard.com" trial watermark appears on my documents.
PDF Converter Professional and PDF Create! include a third party component licensed from Zeon Corporation. This component must be properly activated by the software during the activation process. If this watermark is appearing, this component is unable to be unlocked. Please contact Nuance Technical Support for Desktop Products for help with this issue: http://support.nuance.com
If there is an internet connection on the computer, please use the following steps:
1. Launch PDF Converter / Create.
2. When the activation prompt appears choose "Activate Now" and then "Activate Manually".
3. Once in the manual activation dialog take note of the serial number. Very carefully compare this serial number to the serial number that appears on the back of the product’s CD sleeve or the e-mail confirmation received when the product was downloaded. Make sure that the serial number includes all zeros and no O’s. Also confirm that the characters are not reversed and that it matches exactly what it says on the back of the CD sleeve.
4. Once it is confirmed that the serial number is entered correctly, click the link at the top of the Manual Activation page to complete the activation. If there is no internet connection, use the information in the manual activation page to go to another computer with internet access to complete activation.
Note: A web connection is a system requirement to use these software packages.
• "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is not available."
• "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available."
• "Please wait while Windows configures…"
This issue may appear if the initial installation of the product did not complete successfully.
Other causes may include, a deleted or altered registry setting or removal of a shared system resource, such as a *.DLL or redistributable. When a user receives this message, Nuance recommends inserting the installation media or locating the extracted download and navigating to the appropriate .MSI. For example: PaperPort 11.msi. This will initiate a repair of PDF Converter / Create and the missing or altered component that is generating the message will be resolved. To prevent these messages from appearing in the future, copy the installation CD to a folder on the hard drive and install from that location. This will allow the installer to locate the appropriate *.MSI file without prompting the user to specify the location or insert the CD.
Solution #1:
Instead of using the repair function, Nuance recommends uninstalling and then re-installing the product. The original serial number will be required.
Solution #2:
The repair function will work properly when User Access Control (UAC) is off. To turn off User Account Control (UAC), please use the following steps:
1. Close all applications.
2. Click "Start > Control Panel".
3. Click "Classic View".
4. Click "User Accounts".
5. Click "Turn User Account Control on or off".
6. Clear the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" checkbox.
7. Click "OK" to apply the changes.
8. Restart the system.
There are two recommended solutions for this problem:
Solution #1:
Select “Do not remind me again” from the registration dialog box. The registration prompt should no longer appear.
Solution #2:
Follow these steps to remove the registration reminder from a Windows XP system’s startup settings:
1. Click on “Start”.
2. Click on “Run”.
3. Type the word “MSCONFIG” without the quotes.
4. Click “OK”.
5. Click on the “Startup” Tab.
6. Uncheck the box next to “ereg”.
7. Click on “Apply”.
8. Click “OK”.
9. Reboot the computer.
“Cannot execute this command on an unsecured document.”
This is caused by the method of security implemented when creating the PDF file. PDF files secured by Adobe Policy Server are not supported by PDF Converter or PDF Create!.
The FormTyper functionality in PaperPort enables the user to quickly fill forms from the PaperPort Desktop by dragging a black and white PaperPort Image (.max) to the FormTyper program on the Send To Bar. The document is then opened in the FormTyper window where the user can fill the form or quickly reposition fields, insert new fields, and remove fields to enter data. After the user has completed filling the form they can then print the form or save as a PDF file or PaperPort Image (.max) file to the PaperPort desktop. Once the FormTyper window is closed, the form is no longer fill-able.
The FormTyper functionality in PDF Converter Professional allows users to convert static PDF forms into fill-able PDF forms for sharing or distribution. Additionally, PDF Converter Professional allows the user to add standard PDF form elements including buttons, text fields, check-boxes, radio buttons and dropdown lists to the PDF form. Once the PDF form is saved, it remains fill-able.
When needing to create a PDF using a “blank” workbook, select a cell and insert a “space” character. Nothing will show visibly, but Excel will treat the file as non-blank and allow it to be printed to PDF.
