OmniPage Troubleshooting
Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions about using OmniPage. We recommend that you continue to visit this page as more troubleshooting tips get added in the future. For more detailed support, please visit Nuance’s website.
To restore the formatting to the hyperlink, here is a step by step solution:
1. Right click the damaged hyperlink and choose "Hyperlink > Remove Hyperlink"
2. Re-select the text to create the hyperlink.
3. Right click and choose "Hyperlink"
4. In the dialog box, type the URL desired for the target website and click "Ok"
The hyperlink's formatting is now restored.
To avoid this deletion, use either of the following two methods to delete words or characters:
• Choose “Cut” for the right-click context menu.
• Press the “Backspace” or “Delete” key on the keyboard.
Unfortunately, OmniPage is unable to output files into the same directory structure used for input. If different output locations are required, Nuance recommends creating a number of “Folder Watching” jobs. Configure these jobs to watch a single folder without subfolders and output to a single folder without subfolders.
To give the Image Panel focus, simply click on the Image Panel section of the main OmniPage screen. If the Image Panel is not displayed, click “View > Page Image” to display it.
If this happens, rotate the document manually by using one of the following methods:
1. Click on “Process > Rotate Image”.
2. Choose 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
Or:
1. Click on the “Rotate Image” button.
2. Choose the appropriate option (Left, Right or 180).
• Low system resources – numerous applications running in the background can slow the system.
• Very large files – contributors to this factor include:
o Number of pages within a single file.
o Color depth of a file.
o Resolution of a file.
• Possible file corruption.
• Large number of files – OmniPage can handle many files, but the maximum it can handle is dependent on the available system resources.
If this issue occurs, we recommend the following:
• Close other applications when processing large amounts of files, so that OmniPage can maximize its use of system resources.
• If a single file has a large number of pages, process a group of pages at a time rather than the whole document.
• If possible, pre-process the files to reduce color depth, and resolution. This will reduce overall file sizes and may eliminate the issue within OmniPage.
• If a file is corrupt it may be unusable by OmniPage. Obtain another copy of the file and process that.
• Load files in smaller batches and then allow OmniPage 16 to process them before loading a new batch of files.
• When trying to load multiple large files, process one large file at a time, or process a smaller number of large files.

OmniPage 16 supports four output formats which Direct OCR will place into Microsoft Word:
Plain Text: This setting imports plain text with the line breaks as in the original document in one font type and one font size. It can contain tables and graphics, but has no columns. When using the Digital Camera option, page breaks are not inserted between image files.
Formatted Text: This setting imports text with font and paragraph formatting detected and retained, without columns. When using the Digital Camera option, page breaks are not inserted between image files.
Flowing Page: This setting retains text with font and paragraph formatting. It also retains columns from the original document. This is done by column settings, not by text boxes and frames. That means text will flow between the columns. When using the Digital Camera option, page breaks are inserted between image files.
True Page: This setting will retain as closely as possible the formatting from the original document. Headings, columns, graphics and other items will be placed in frames. Font and paragraph styling is retained. When using the Digital Camera option, page breaks are inserted between image files, which are inserted in frames.
Solution:
Direct OCR is generally used to import text into an existing document, without any formatting. Thus, the Plain Text option will probably be best for most uses of Direct OCR. Nuance recommends adjusting the output format for Direct OCR to match the input needs. To change the settings, please use the steps below:
1. Use the following depending on the version Microsoft Word being used:
• In Microsoft Word 2000/XP/2003, click on the "File > Acquire Text Settings (OmniPage 16)" menu.
• In Microsoft Word 2007, click on the "Add-Ins > Acquire Text Settings (OmniPage 16)" menu.
2. Click on the "Output Format" tab.
3. Choose an appropriate output format:
• Plain Text
• Formatted Text
• Flowing Page
• True Page
4. Click "OK".
5. Use the following to acquire text depending on the version Microsoft Word being used:
• In Microsoft Word 2000/XP/2003, click on the "File > Acquire Text (OmniPage 16)" menu.
• In Microsoft Word 2007, click on the "Add-Ins > Acquire Text (OmniPage 16)" menu.
Use the following steps to export a range of pages:
1. Load and recognise the desired number of files.
2. Select a smaller number of pages by clicking on the corresponding thumbnails in the Thumbnail Panel.
• Note: Select multiple pages by holding the CTRL or SHIFT button and clicking on each thumbnail file.
3. Click the "Export Results" button and select the desired output method and type a filename.
4. Specify the file type to save as on the "Save to File" dialog (or the "Export Options" dialog if saving to FTP, mail or SharePoint).
5. Choose "Selected pages" as the "Page range" option.
6. Click "OK" to save the selected pages.
"Similar product of OmniPage 16 found on your System. Do you agree to skip the installation?"
Clicking the "Yes" button will cancel the installation of OmniPage 16.
Clicking the 'No" button will display the following message:
"Another version of OmniPage product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of the product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel."
Solution:
Please uninstall your existing version of OmniPage through Add/Remove Programs before trying to install OmniPage 16:
1. Click "Start > Control Panel"
2. Double-click "Add or Remove Programs".
• Note: In Windows Vista, double-click "Programs and Features"
3. Locate "ScanSoft OmniPage 15"(or whatever version is installed).
4. Click the "Remove" button.
• Note: In Windows Vista, click the "Uninstall" button.
1. Right-click on the OmniPage 16 desktop shortcut and select "Delete" from the context menu.
2. Click the "Delete shortcut" button when the Confirm Shortcut Delete dialog appears.
3. Navigate to "C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\OmniPage16" using Windows Explorer.
• Note: This assumes the product was installed in the default location.
4. Right-click on the file "OmniPage16.exe" and select "Send To > Desktop (Create shortcut)" from the context menu.
5. The new shortcut "Shortcut to OmniPage16.exe" should appear on the desktop.
Note: To change the file name of the shortcut, right-click on the shortcut and choose "Rename" from the context menu. The name will be highlighted. It can then be named "OmniPage16" or any other name the user prefers.
1. Click "Add" in the OCR Proofreader dialog box with no user dictionary loaded or open the "User Dictionary Files" dialog box from the "Tools" menu and click "New".
2. Name your dictionary in the "Save New User Dictionary" dialog box.
3. Click "OK". The new dictionary is set as current.
4. Add words to the new dictionary during proofing or by editing it, as described below.
Or, to add a user dictionary file to the list:
1. Click "Add..." in the "User Dictionary Files" dialog box.
2. Accept the default folder or select the folder where your user dictionary file is located.
3. Select the user dictionary file and click "OK". The user dictionary file will appear in the "User Dictionary Files" dialog box.
4. Click "Close".
A new dictionary is not marked as "current" when it is loaded and there is no 'Browse' button in the OmniPage 16 "Tools > Options" OCR tab to navigate to the location of the new user dictionary. We recommend using the "Tools > User Dictionaries" menu to access the "User Dictionary Files" dialog to manage user dictionaries. To set a custom user dictionary as the current dictionary, please follow the steps below:
1. Click "Tools > User Dictionaries".
2. Highlight the desired dictionary in the "File name" list.
3. Click "Set As Current".
4. Click "Close".
If there is an internet connection on the computer, please use the following steps:
1. Launch OmniPage.
2. When the activation prompt appears choose "Activate Now" and then "Activate Manually".
3. Once in the manual activation dialog take note of the serial number. Very carefully compare this serial number to the serial number that appears on the back of the product’s CD sleeve or the e-mail confirmation received when the product was downloaded. Make sure that the serial number includes all zeros and no O’s. Also confirm that the characters are not reversed and that it matches exactly what it says on the back of the CD sleeve.
4. Once it is confirmed that the serial number is entered correctly, click the link at the top of the Manual Activation page to complete the activation. If there is no internet connection, use the information in the manual activation page to go to another computer with internet access to complete activation.
Note: A web connection is a system requirement to use these software packages.
• "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is not available."
• "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available."
• "Please wait while Windows configures…"
This issue may appear if the initial installation of the product did not complete successfully.
Other causes may include, a deleted or altered registry setting or removal of a shared system resource, such as a *.DLL or redistributable. When a user receives this message, Nuance recommends inserting the installation media or locating the extracted download and navigating to the appropriate .MSI.
For example: OmniPage 16.msi. This will initiate a repair of OmniPage and the missing or altered component that is generating the message will be resolved. To prevent these messages from appearing in the future, copy the installation CD to a folder on the hard drive and install from that location. This will allow the installer to locate the appropriate *.MSI file without prompting the user to specify the location or insert the CD.
Solution #1:
Instead of using the repair function, Nuance recommends uninstalling and then re-installing the product. The original serial number will be required.
Solution #2:
The repair function will work properly when User Access Control (UAC) is off. To turn off User Account Control (UAC), please use the following steps:
1. Close all applications.
2. Click "Start > Control Panel".
3. Click "Classic View".
4. Click "User Accounts".
5. Click "Turn User Account Control on or off".
6. Clear the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" checkbox.
7. Click "OK" to apply the changes.
8. Restart the system.
There are two recommended solutions for this problem:
Solution #1:
Select “Do not remind me again” from the registration dialog box. The registration prompt should no longer appear.
Solution #2:
Follow these steps to remove the registration reminder from a Windows XP system’s startup settings:
1. Click on “Start”.
2. Click on “Run”.
3. Type the word “MSCONFIG” without the quotes.
4. Click “OK”.
5. Click on the “Startup” Tab.
6. Uncheck the box next to “ereg”.
7. Click on “Apply”.
8. Click “OK”.
9. Reboot the computer.
“OmniPage cannot load this image. Unsupported file, compression or encryption type.”
This is caused by the method of security implemented when creating the PDF file. PDF files secured by Adobe Policy Server are not supported by OmniPage.
When needing to create a PDF using a “blank” workbook, select a cell and insert a “space” character. Nothing will show visibly, but Excel will treat the file as non-blank and allow it to be printed to PDF.
